Our History
The Abuja Literary & Arts Festival (AlitFest) was founded in 2021, under the auspices of the Abuja Literary Society (ALS), with the vision of creating a platform to celebrate and promote African literature and arts. Over the years, the festival has grown to become one of the most anticipated literary events in Nigeria, attracting writers, poets, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from across the continent and beyond. The festival serves as a bridge, connecting established voices with emerging talents, while fostering an appreciation for African storytelling and creative expression.
Our Goals & Objectives
Promote African Literature and Arts: To highlight the richness and diversity of African stories, voices, and artistic expressions on a global stage.
Inspire Creative Talent: To provide a nurturing environment for budding writers, poets, and artists to develop their skills through workshops, mentorship, and networking opportunities.
Encourage Dialogue: To facilitate meaningful conversations around literature, culture, and societal issues, fostering understanding and collaboration within and beyond the African continent.
Build a Creative Community: To create a vibrant community of writers, readers, and artists that supports and uplifts one another.
Celebrate Cultural Heritage: To showcase the cultural wealth of Nigeria and Africa at large, encouraging the preservation and appreciation of indigenous stories and traditions.
Notable Milestones
2021: The inaugural edition of ALitFest, marking the beginning of a significant literary and cultural journey.
2022: Introduction of the Poetry Grand Slam, which has since become one of the festival’s most celebrated events.
2023: Expansion to include workshops on animation, filmmaking, and other modern art forms, broadening the festival’s scope.
2023: Launch of the Books and Art Fair, creating a vibrant marketplace for creatives to showcase and sell their work.
2023: Attendance reaches an all-time high, with participants from over 10 countries, cementing AlitFest’s reputation as a leading literary event in Africa.
2024: Recognition by the organization, earning accolades for its contribution to African literature and arts.
